HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN NIGERIA
HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN NIGERIA
Human trafficking is an unyielding menace that infiltrated the society of Nigeria especially in years 2016 and 2017 when substantial number of her nationals were involved in making perilous trips across the Sahara. The nation has teeming workable population seeking solace in travelling out of the country for greener pastures they assume they'd find in their destination. However they aren't even sure of circumstances they would encounter to reach promise land of their dreams.
Human trafficking dates back to early 60s when people moved out of the country to find resort in common destination of Europe, several factors led people to engage in this deadly Journey across the Sahara, but the major cause is the poor economic situation that has led to great austerity and penury. while thoughtful hope of these people is to migrate across the sahara, impending quagmire has a progeny from governments inaptitudeness and indifference to the economic plight of the people which has made many to be so desperate with nursing a mustard of hope in betterment of the country's economy.
Seeing some colleagues adventure on the journey and become successful is an encouraging factor for the prospectors to engage in such trip, as their friends and colleagues flaunt wealth when they return or on social media, discontented fellows back home becomes covetous and such quick fortune will be amiable to them without minding the threat that awaits them in such journey.
In most cases trafficking ends in European countries of Gibraltar, Espana, Italia and Malta where people travel across the Mediterranean sea to source greener pastures of life in Europe.
Trafficking comes along with life threatening tendencies across the Sahara where there are records of death of transients every year caused by lack of water, tornadoes, wild animals and desert criminals who awaits their prey in the desert of Sahara across Niger, Southern Algeria, Libya and Morroco. Those who migrate through the easy route of Libya, faces bigger imbroglio to Keep their lives as there awaits them bandits and millitias especially from Aghadez to Tripoli or Benghazi, who seizes them on their path to the coast and keep them as Slaves, selling the captives and also selling their body organs. It is really unthinkable that people could commit to a journey of over 1000 kilometers from the Saharan boundary of Libya to Tripoli while also crossing the stormy Mediterranean sea of over 500 kilometers to reach the island of Sicilia in Italy.
This illegal migration has a damning effect on Nigeria's productivity been the most populous black nation in the world, this human resources can be chanelled to real productivity but the framework isn't designed to absolve the teeming mundane.
Aside for the character deformation the traffickers have caused the nation which is apparent around the world, it simply portray incapability and lack of commitment from bodies concerned, it is acknowlegible that defiance and lack of patriotism is the pulling force behind traffickers so if coalescence can be actualised with constructive inference then something good can be obtained to help abolish this perilous journeys.
Punishment should vetted on culprits, which ranges from imprisonment to reformation and engagement of traffickers, although many of the traffickers ail from different countries which include Egypt, Syria,Mali,Ghana and many more. The National Agency For the Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP) have been fantastic in their effort to curb this menace through activities and jingles but more is expected of them.
The Border as well has to be strengthened especially the northern frontiers which is the route to traffickers paradise so more agencies and paramilitaries should be stationed at the boundaries with Niger republic to ameliorate and abolish the disgraceful indulgence.
